The Alchemy of Plant Remedies

Spagyric herbalism is an ancient method of preparing plant extracts that originated within the traditions of alchemy. Rather than simply extracting the chemical constituents of a plant, spagyric preparation seeks to separate, purify, and reunite the essential components of the plant, creating a medicine that is considered more complete and energetically refined.
The word spagyric comes from two Greek roots:
Spao - to separate
Ageiro - to reunite
Together, they describe the fundamental alchemical process: separate the plant into its core principles, refine them individually, and then recombine them into a more potent whole.
The Three Principles of the Plant
In spagyric philosophy, every plant contains three essential principles, often referred to in alchemy as Salt, Sulphur, and Mercury. These do not refer directly to the modern chemical substances of the same name, but rather to symbolic aspects of the plant.
Mercury - The Spirit This represents the volatile, life-giving essence of the plant. In practical terms, it is often extracted through fermentation and distillation.
Sulphur - The Soul This refers to the aromatic oils and active compounds that give a plant its unique character and therapeutic qualities.
Salt - The Body The mineral structure of the plant. In spagyric preparation, the remaining plant material is calcined (reduced to ash) and the purified mineral salts are recovered.
Each of these principles is processed individually before being reunited in the final medicine.
The Alchemical Process
Traditional spagyric preparation is a slow and deliberate process that can take weeks or even months to complete.
The general stages include:
Extraction - The plant is macerated in alcohol to extract its medicinal compounds.
Separation - The plant matter is removed and set aside.
Calcination - The plant material is burned to ash to recover the mineral salts.
Purification - The salts are repeatedly dissolved and crystallised to purify them.
Recombination - The purified salts are returned to the tincture.
Through this process the plant is said to be broken down and reborn, creating a remedy that contains the full spectrum of its physical and energetic qualities.

Because the mineral salts are returned to the tincture, spagyric medicines contain components that are normally lost in standard herbal extraction methods.
