The Seven Planetary Archetypes in Alchemical Herbalism

Understanding the Cosmic Patterns Within Plants

Within traditional herbal astrology, plants were grouped according to planetary archetypes.

These archetypes describe patterns that appear throughout nature, in the behaviour of plants, in the rhythms of the human body, and in the emotional and psychological qualities certain herbs seem to evoke.

The classical system recognises seven primary planetary archetypes:

Sun

Moon

Mars

Mercury

Jupiter

Venus

Saturn

Sun - Vitality and Life Force

The Sun represents vitality, warmth, circulation, and the animating force of life.

Plants associated with the Sun often display bright colours, upright growth, or strong aromatic qualities. Many solar herbs are traditionally used to support vitality, circulation, and overall constitutional strength.

Solar plants often feel warming, energising, and illuminating in their effects.

They are sometimes used when the body needs renewed vitality or when the spirit feels depleted.

Moon - Rhythm and Nourishment

The Moon reflects cycles, emotional states, fluids, and the deeper rhythms of the body.

Lunar herbs are often calming, soothing, and restorative. They support sleep, emotional balance, or nervous system regulation.

Just as the Moon governs tides, lunar plants are frequently associated with the movement of fluids within the body and the restoration of natural rhythms.

They tend to carry a soft, receptive, and nurturing quality.

Mars - Action and Strength

Mars represents heat, movement, and decisive action.

Plants associated with Mars are often stimulating, pungent, or strongly warming. They may encourage circulation, activate digestion, or support the body’s natural defensive responses.

Mars herbs are sometimes used when the body needs momentum, resilience, or activation.

Their energy is often direct, bold, and energising.

Mercury - Communication and Adaptation

Mercury represents movement, communication, and connection.

Mercurial herbs are often associated with the nervous system, mental clarity, and the movement of signals throughout the body.

Many aromatic herbs that stimulate the senses or sharpen awareness have historically been associated with Mercury.

They tend to support adaptability, perception, and mental responsiveness.

Jupiter - Growth and Expansion

Jupiter symbolises growth, nourishment, and abundance.

Jupiterian herbs are often generous plants, large, nourishing, or deeply restorative. They may support tissue repair, vitality, and long-term resilience.

These plants are frequently associated with growth, restoration, and the strengthening of the body’s deeper reserves.

Venus - Harmony and Beauty

Venus represents harmony, attraction, nourishment, and beauty.

Venusian herbs are often softening, moistening, and restorative. Many are associated with the heart, reproductive system, skin, and emotional wellbeing.

These plants frequently carry floral scents, lush growth patterns, or soothing qualities.

Venus herbs tend to support balance, receptivity, and emotional warmth.

Saturn – Structure and Endurance

Saturn represents structure, boundaries, and endurance.

Saturnian herbs are often grounding, contracting, or deeply restorative. Many support long-term healing processes and structural systems within the body.

These plants tend to work slowly but profoundly, helping the body rebuild strength and resilience over time.

Saturn herbs are associated with discipline, stability, and deep restoration.

A Language for Understanding Plants

Planetary archetypes are not meant to replace modern herbal science. Rather, they offer an additional framework. A symbolic language that helps us recognise patterns within nature.

Over centuries of observation, herbalists noticed that plants sharing similar characteristics often produced similar effects within the body.

Planetary correspondences became a way of describing those patterns.

This framework allows herbalists to see plants as expressions of larger natural forces.

Today, we continue to explore these relationships between plants and planetary archetypes.

These correspondences offer a symbolic lens through which to understand plant intelligence and provide a philosophical bridge between herbal medicine and the wider rhythms of nature.

Understanding these patterns can deepen our relationship with both plants and the natural world.

Exploring Planetary Herbalism

At Wild & Holy, our work with spagyric herbal preparations explores these traditional relationships between plants, planetary archetypes, and alchemical medicine.

Each plant carries its own rhythm, character, and pattern of growth.

Learning to recognise these patterns is part of the deeper art of herbalism.
